Phil enjoys a broad commercial practice with particular specialisms in domestic and cross-border insolvency, commercial, offshore and chancery litigation. He has wide experience of all aspects of insolvency work in which he is ranked as a leading junior by Legal 500, where he is described as ‘client-friendly’, ‘approachable’ and ‘good on his feet’. He has appeared up to the Privy Council and regularly acts as sole counsel in the Chancery and Commercial Divisions, as well as the Insolvency and Companies Courts.
Much of Phil’s work has an international element. He has advised in matters involving the courts in various offshore jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, the BVI, the Cayman Islands, Jersey and Guernsey, and recently advised in the restructuring of $10bn of debt that spanned Hong Kong, PRC and English law governed contracts. He is also developing significant experience in the recognition of foreign insolvencies. He was instructed in the recognition of significant bankruptcy proceedings in Abu Dhabi in Re Almuhairi [2024] EWHC 535 (Ch) and has acted in cross border recognition matters from Hong Kong, Korea and the Channel Islands.
He is regularly instructed in applications for injunctive relief, including for proprietary injunctions, freezing orders and anti-suit injunctions, and has recently obtained freezing relief in respect of £60m of assets. In his recent arbitration work he has advised in an appeal to the Mauritian Supreme Court, in an ICC arbitration concerning geothermal power plants worth $2bn, and obtained wide-ranging anti-suit relief in Essar Projects Limited v CIJE Kuwait.
Phil enjoys court work and has significant advocacy experience for his call, having in his early years of practice appeared in a range of interlocutory applications and multi-day trials as sole counsel.
Before coming to the Bar, Phil graduated with a First Class degree in History from Oxford University. He then spent three years working in consulting, initially in financial services where he was involved in the largest restructure of a UK bank since the financial crisis, before moving to mergers and acquisitions. Prior to pupillage, Phil was awarded Middle Temple’s top scholarship for his legal training and won the Rosamund Smith Moot Competition.
