We are thrilled to announce that James M. Peck, a former U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge and serving International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court, is joining our ranks to grow the chambers’ alternative dispute resolution service.

James Peck has had a long and influential career in practice and is well known internationally as a practitioner, jurist and mediator. Most recently, he chaired the cross-border insolvency practice at the global law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1967 and from New York University School of Law in 1971.

Former Judge Peck was a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York from 2006 to 2014, and presided over the Lehman Brothers cases during the Global Financial Crisis. As a Judge, he successfully mediated some of the most complex and consequential Chapter 11 cases, including American Airlines, General Motors, Residential Capital and MFGlobal. After retiring as a judge, he has concentrated on dispute resolution in corporate insolvencies.

Mr Peck has significant experience in bankruptcy law, creditors rights, business restructuring, financial contracts and derivatives and the settlement of commercial disputes. He has lectured and participated in educational panels worldwide.

Peck currently chairs the Business Bankruptcy Advisory Committee of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. By invitation, he is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a member of the expert panel of the Panel of Recognised International Market Experts in Finance.

Peck is active in the Alternative Dispute Resolution committee of INSOL International and is a past president of the International Insolvency Institute, which honoured him with its award for making a distinguished contribution to international insolvency law.

Peck served as judicial chair of the American Bankruptcy Institute’s annual New York City Bankruptcy Conference and as co-chair of its advisory committee on the safe harbours. He has been selected as a member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre’s Panel of Arbitrators.

James Peck commented: I have always been impressed with South Square and know that it enjoys a well-deserved reputation for excellence in the insolvency world that is second to none.  I am very excited by the opportunity to work with them in my ADR practice.
