The case Credit Suisse Virtuoso SICAV-SIF and another v SoftBank and others is recognised as one of The Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases for 2025. This high-profile litigation involves Credit Suisse, which was taken over by UBS in 2023 partly due to events related to this case, and SoftBank. The case focuses on a claim under section 423 of the Insolvency Act 1986 and is linked to the collapse of the Greensill Group. Representing the SoftBank defendants, Tom Smith KC, Adam Al-Attar KC, and Peter Burgess from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan bring forward arguments involving novel points of law.
Additionally featured in The Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases for 2025 is The Public Institution For Social Security v Al Rajaan and others. Rory Brown is sole trial counsel for a group of four defendants in the action brought by Kuwaiti government organisation, the Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS). PIFSS alleges that between 1995 and 2015 its former Director General received allegedly secret commissions worth c. US$1 billion (plus interest). The trial – in which the court will receive expert evidence and submissions on Kuwaiti, Swiss, and English law – is listed for a year from mid-March 2025 to March 2026. PIFSS’ claim is robustly defended by various defendants. Rory is instructed by a team of solicitors at LK Law LLP.
